Garage Door Spring Replacement

It’s only a matter of time before it happens. They are designed with a life span. It’s typically 10,000 cycles. Your garage door springs will eventually break. So, what are your options when that happens?

Well, there aren’t that many. You must change the springs. There’s no two ways about it.

But there are options for replacement. Whether it is a residential or commercial door there are different spring setups we can provide to better serve your needs. For our residential customers, we almost always recommend replacing the springs with the factory standard. The typical spring life span of 10,000 cycles serves just about all residential customers without issue. However, when it comes to commercial doors, we sometimes offer other options.

Extending Commercial Door Spring Life Cycle

One of the main ones is an extended life cycle. Every door is engineered with a certain spring configuration based on what the application for the door is. As I said earlier, 10,000 cycles is the standard. But we can configure the springs to increase the life cycles to 25000, 50000 or even 100000. We do that by changing the wire size or inside diameter.

Springs have three basic measurements. The first is the wire size. Wire size is measured in thousands of an inch. It varies from .125 to .450. The second is the inside diameter. The inside diameter is standardized, and we always measure the inside since the outside measurement will vary according to wire size. The third is the spring length. This is measured from one end of the unwound wire to the other. Never measure the cones. Every spring is configured in this way: wire size x inside diameter x length.

To increase the life span of your springs, we change the configuration but maintain the same Inch Pounds Per turn (IPPT). IPPT is important because the springs are configured according to the drum size, door height and door weight. So, long story short, we can take just about any door and re spring it to increase the life span of the springs!

We also can change the type of wire that is used to increase the life cycle. A typical wire is round but we can change it to square wire, which significantly increases the life span. This is common in commercial and industrial applications.
