What makes farm doors different
Three things, and they compound.
The openings are large. Equipment has grown steadily and the buildings have not, so a lot of what we do is fitting the biggest practical door into an opening that was sized for smaller machinery.
The buildings are old. Quonsets and machine sheds built decades ago have settled and shifted. The opening is rarely square, rarely plumb and rarely the dimension anybody expects.
The conditions are hard. Wind loading on an exposed yard, drifting snow that packs into tracks and seals, and equipment traffic that occasionally catches a guide. A door that would last twenty years on a suburban garage has a shorter life here.
Measuring an old building
This is where the job is won or lost, and it is worth being blunt about.
We measure the opening as built rather than as designed. Every dimension gets checked, including diagonals, because a building that has racked slightly will take a door that is square and hold it out of true forever.
If the framing needs attention before a door can hang properly, we say so at the measuring stage. Finding out after the old door is off is considerably worse for everybody.
Choosing the door type
Sectional overhead where there is headroom and backroom for it. This is the default and it works well.
Folding where there is not. FINDOOR folding doors fold to the sides of the opening, so buildings with no headroom above and nothing behind are no longer a problem. On very large openings this is frequently the only workable answer.
Replacing sliding doors is a common request. Old sliding doors on farm buildings freeze shut, jam on their tracks and fill with drifted snow, and replacing one with an overhead or folding door usually solves several complaints at once.
Distance

Our quonset opening is not square. Is that a problem?
It is normal rather than a problem, and it is exactly why we measure the opening as it actually is. Farm buildings move over decades. A door ordered to the size the building was supposed to be is the classic way this job goes wrong.
Can you replace an old sliding door with an overhead one?
Often yes, and it is a common request because sliding doors on farm buildings freeze, jam and fill with drifted snow. Whether an overhead door fits depends on headroom and backroom, which we check before quoting.
What if there is no headroom for a sectional door?
Then a folding door is usually the answer. FINDOOR folding doors fold to the sides rather than stacking overhead, which removes the constraint entirely on buildings that have none.
Do you travel out to farms?
Constantly. Our Arcola branch exists largely for this work, and rural distance is normal for us. Do not assume you are too far out to be worth a call.
