What usually goes wrong
Most garage door failures come down to a handful of parts, and nearly all of them are wear items rather than faults with the door itself.
Springs carry the weight of the door. Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the opening and extension springs run alongside the tracks. Either way they are wound under real tension and they have a finite number of cycles in them. When one lets go you usually hear it: a bang from the garage, and then a door that will not lift. This is the single most common call we take.
Cables run from the bottom bracket to the drum and translate the spring’s force into lift. They fray at the loop end first. A snapped cable will drop one side of the door and jam it in the opening at an angle.
Rollers, hinges and bearings wear quietly. A door that has started grinding, juddering or drifting sideways in the track is normally telling you the rollers are done. Left long enough it will bind hard enough to pull the track out of line.
Openers fail in more ways than the door does. It might be a stripped drive gear, a bad logic board, misaligned safety sensors, or simply a worn-out unit. A door that reverses immediately after touching the floor is almost always a sensor or travel-limit problem, not a door problem.
