When it is worth paying for
Start with an honest question. Do you heat the garage, or is it attached to the house?
If yes, an insulated door is close to a straightforward win. You are currently losing heat through the largest uninsulated surface in the building, and on an attached garage some of that loss is coming out of the house.
If no, be sceptical. Insulating a detached shed you never heat does not save you anything, because there is nothing being kept warm. You get a quieter, stiffer door, which is worth something, and that is roughly the whole benefit.
We would rather say that than sell insulation into a building that will never notice it.
The number is not the point
R-value is the figure everybody compares, and it is the least useful part of the decision.
A garage door is a large panel surrounded by gaps. Where a door actually loses heat is at the bottom seal against an uneven slab, down the jambs, across the top, and between the sections. Those paths do not appear in the R-value at all.
A moderately insulated door that is sealed properly will outperform a high specification door with a perished bottom seal every time. So the sealing detail is where the attention belongs, and it is the part we check on every service call regardless of what you called us about.
Polyurethane and polystyrene
Polyurethane is injected as a foam that expands and bonds to both steel skins. It insulates better per inch and it turns the panel into a bonded structure, which makes it considerably stiffer.
Polystyrene is a preformed board slid into the panel cavity. It costs less and it insulates adequately, but it does not bond the skins, so the panel stays as stiff as the steel alone.
The side benefits
Two things people notice after fitting an insulated door that they did not buy it for.
It is noticeably quieter, both in operation and as a barrier against outside noise. On a house with a bedroom over the garage that is not a small thing.
And it dents far less. A bonded insulated panel is stiff in a way a single skin door is not, which matters wherever the door is in reach of vehicles, equipment or hockey pucks.
